On the first turn of this move's use, the user will grab the target and both of them enter a semi-invulnerable state where they are rendered immune to all attacks (even those that would otherwise never miss, such as Swift), with some exceptions. On the following turn, both user and target return to ground level, and damage is inflicted on the target.

The Pokémon grabbed by Sky Drop is prevented from taking any action, including using items or running away/switching (it is however possible to use items on a targeted Pokémon in a double or triple battle if the turn used to do this belongs to one of your other party members. It's also possible to run from a wild double battle with this method).

Users and targets of Sky Drop still take damage from any harmful statuses they may have, and from any harmful weather conditions that may be present, but are otherwise immune to all attacks, with the exceptions of Sky Uppercut, Hurricane, Thunder, Gust, Twister, Smack Down, Whirlwind, Aerial Virus, or any Wind-Type move. The base power of Gust and Twister is doubled against both airborne Pokémon, and Smack Down and the effects of phazing moves (e.g. Whirlwind) and items (e.g. Eject Button) will cancel Sky Drop immediately if they hit Sky Drop's user, with the target not suffering damage upon landing. However, Sky Drop will not end if its target is hit by Smack Down, nor will phazing moves have any effect on it. This move also immediately ends if the user succumbs to the effects of a turn-skipping status (such as paralysis, flinching, or freezing) while airborne.

Gravity will also cancel Sky Drop if it comes into effect mid-use, and also disables further use of the move for as long as the Gravity effect is active. Any move may hit the user or the target if the attacker has the No_Guard Ability or has used Lock-On / Mind Reader on the intended target prior to Sky Drop's execution. Either airborne Pokémon may also be hit by any move if they are the ones to have No Guard.

Flying-types and Levitators can be picked up by Sky Drop, but will not be damaged by it unless their immunity to Ground-type attacks is suppressed (e.g. the effects of Smack Down). Sky Drop will however work normally on non-Levitating/non-Flying-type Pokémon that are under the effects of Magnet Rise, Rocket Rise or Telekinesis, and will not halt their effects after they return to the ground.

If a Pokémon in the middle of a multi-turn move (such as Rollout or Thrash is brought into the air, the Pokémon will discontinue using the move when freed. However, Pokémon that were in the middle of Thrash and its ilk will still become confused at the end of the turn.

Despite technically having a charging phase, this move does not activate the Power Herb item.

In a triple battle, this move may target anyone other than the user.
